Write a Romantic Personal Ad

How to Write a Personal Ad
By Jan Verhoeff

Curiosity bites! But, so does cupid. So, how does one write a romantic personal ad that attracts the right kind of attention? Dating can be such a frenzied activity, with so little time to actually meet the right person.

But, here I sit, in front of the most common communication tool of our time, so how do I write a Romantic Personal Ad that will attract the kind of person I want to date?

“SWF, 4 children, 46, looking for SWM with good attitude” just didn’t appeal to me. So, I did some research and wrote a great romantic personal ad, getting lots of knocks and winks. So I thought I’d share my process.

1. Before you start spouting out what you want, you need to look at what you really do want. Personally, I have a list and I’ll share a few items on that list. Someone who will laugh with me, enjoys a good meal and might even help cook it, and can participate in quality conversation will work for starters. Know what you want, so you can aim for your goal.

2. Start out with some specifics and open up to more general ideas. You may know what you want, but there’s only one Brad Pit, and he’s not looking for someone 46 years old with 4 children. So, leave some options open and you might be surprised at who signs on as Mr. Right. Heck, Brad Pit may be available next week?

3. Write as if you already know who will be reading your Romantic Personal Ad. You know, like it’s going to be your best friend, because that’s the result you want from the Personal Ad. You want a new best friend, one who will knock you off your feet (well, not literally), make you swoon with desire, and pick up his own socks. Write your Romantic Ad in a conversational tone, and talk like you would be talking to your new best friend. Maybe he’ll think he already knows you on the first call.

4. Don’t tell them what you look like, provide a great photo of yourself. Don’t tell them what kind of personality you have, show them with your conversational manner and charming style. Be yourself, and charm your way into their hearts. Be naturally yourself and share the thoughts you’d want someone to know. Make your personality shine through by using active energized verbs and descriptions. Share the essence of who you are.

5. Your Romantic Personal Ad can be as long or as short as you wish (or as the site allows) but you may want to start out with a shorter ad that you can add to as you recognize characteristics you might want to share. It’s difficult to take away from an ad, but putting more in is almost always an option. Write your ad on word pad, and check your spelling and grammar. Nothing says YUK like misspelled words and bad grammar.

6. Be honest but don’t dump all your issues in the ad. Nobody really cares if you have thunder thighs, one blue eye and one brown one, or just got over the plague (as long as you aren’t still a carrier). Be honest and share your best qualities, keep the bad qualities to yourself at this point, unless you have pointy ears and sprang from a Vulcan (which might get you more dates).

7. Don’t give it all away in a personal ad, you want something to chatter about on your first dates besides the weather and the cost of gas. However, you might want to consider the cost of gas in where you search for your date. Consideration for the other person’s wallet is a nicety that won’t be forgotten. If distance may be an issue, be honest about where you live.

If you are looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right – you may just find them. If you’re looking for a friend, that’s entirely possible too. Get out there and live your life well and love will find you.

The Most Romantic Date Contest

Dare to be different!

At a recent Valentine's Banquet, I asked 30 couples to share their most romantic date with the audience. There were random dates that included everything from dinner at the Brown Palace in Denver to watching the ships come in on San Francisco Bay.

One lovely couple met in Alaska and remember their most romantic date as a 24 hour lock in in the frozen north, on the longest night of winter with 30 teenagers at a church function. Trust me, there were a lot of raised eyebrows at that revelation!

But, they explained that the pastor had asked them (as single adults) to supervise the youth function and when the power went out unexpectedly, the kids all gathered in blankets near the fire to keep warm. Being older than the teens, it would have been inappropriate for them to snuggle with teenagers (we all know where this is going) so they snuggled together. At the time, they were hardly even good friends, but by morning when the power came back on and the heat rekindled itself, they'd realized they wanted to get to know each other better. Many cold night and many winters later, their fire is still ignited and the lights haven't gone out on their love... It must have been an inspirational night.

Another couple, just old enough to have enjoyed dating during the aftermath of World War II, shared that they were only allowed to date on Friday night. Both worked long hours, cared for younger siblings while their parents worked, and had to pay their own way. Their favorite date memory surrounded a drive in restaurant where they had thick juicy hamburgers, French fries and milkshakes for a dollar before attending whatever moving was showing at the local theater. Later, as newly weds saving for their first home, they reverted to their same special night on the town, because it was an indulgence they could afford and still save money for a down payment. Their favorite date, now? A burger and fries with extra thick milkshakes at the local drive in and a movie... although, they often exchange the movie concept for a short walk in the park or an evening at home reading poetry they've written for each other over the years, because they're not fond of current movies.

After interviewing these couples, we came up with one particular dating package that all the couples thought would inspire romance and create a memory for the receiving couple. That package (which I'm not going to reveal quite yet) will be the winning package for the couple who wins this romantic date contest. To enter this contest, go to Buy an Ad and get your Romantic Personal Ad within 24 hours, to help you locate your Date and be entered for FIVE chances to win this contest.

Single, looking for marriage...

"Daringly single mom, seeks single dad to share the fun of raising a family. Children okay. Financial success desirable. Overwhelming lifestyle understood. If you're ready to share the day to day drudgery and test future possibilities, contact this single mom and see where the river of chaos takes you."

There can be no looking back, once you place the ad on a singles site, you'll be searching through the rubble of messages from men who understand exactly what you're thinking and they're seeking someone just like you, because you're real.

The battle of the sexes ends in parental duties. Once you carry the load, you begin to understand the reality of being a parent and the need to have someone who shares your day. You cease to seek perfection and begin to seek strength and tenacity. You seek a like minded partner for the rest of your life, who understands that romance begins in the dishpan, not on the beach.

Dare to add a touch of reality to your singles ads. If you're a single parent, there are other single parents out there who will understand the concept of needing a pillow partner to talk up the day before romance comes a calling.

I'll wait for you...

The finish has begun to rust away, the paint dull and faded. There's white walls on the tires, and the tread is worn a bit thin.

He still starts on command and carries you wherever you choose to go. The speedometer works well and there's plenty of fuel in the tank. If you're looking for a bright and shiny new model, you might want to keep movin' on.

But if you're interested in a man who's been down the road a time or two, has some experience and is just worn in well enough to know how to treat a lady. I'll be waiting...
